Botanic Gardens Restaurant

The distance from garden to the plate has never been shorter than at this white pavilion in the centre of Adelaide Botanic Garden. Chef Paul Baker interprets the surrounding landscape with intelligence, harvesting daily to produce an exciting menu completely in tune with the seasons. Recent changes introduced more choices across four sections, from snacks through to desserts. There are surprises, too, such as duck ham wrapped around intense dwarf mulberries, which is further enhanced by quail egg, hazelnut and lovage. Deeply comforting 40-hour beef short rib and licorice-braised shin with smoked potato mash is lick-the-plate-clean satisfying. Such flavour combinations sit easily with an interesting list of mostly local wines, beers and cocktails - some featuring house-made vermouth. Desserts forgo overt sweetness, as with a fascinating concoction of sour cherries, dark honeycomb, anise hyssop cream and lemon verbena.
